What I’m beginning to feel from my capoeira practise is that you can only think clearly and quickly when you have complete mastery of the moves you want to deploy - if you have to think through how a particular move goes, it diverts enough brainpower that you start getting... behind. So the fastest road to the thinking game is still drill. The other thing is that there are those magic times when you get a flash of satori. You’re playing a thinking person’s game, but it just happens. I don’t know what you can do to encourage that other than meditation. My ideal is to end up like the Pratchett’s Silver Horde of elderly barbarians. Slow, arthritic, and yet always doing exactly the right thing in exactly the right place. |
