Stylish. Some nice moments. But, overall, one of the dumbest films I’ve seen in a while. Not, say, Matrix II and III dumb. It’s also fun, which I can’t say for the Matrix movies.
The first Matrix is a masterpiece. The weight of allegory and plot exposition crushed the second and third.
Although, while suffering through Revolutions and watching the sequence where Trinity and Neo shoot out above the clouds I did think “what a great sci-fi moment”.
Every time I see Hollywood evoking mythology (Neo/Superman as Christ) I can’t help but think its US cultural indoctrination on a global scale. I mean, even moreso than usual...
Sometimes the most important thing an artist can do is knowing when to stop - on a smaller level, one of the things that has intrigued me with the whole business of director’s cut DVDs is that often they cut is worse, not better; or at least it doesn’t add anything.
The subsequent Matrix movies would be better if they simply didn’t exist; as you say, too much “stuff”, too much of which was rather ill thought out.
